The yoga strap is one of the most frequently used props in our Alignment classes. It can be used in different ways to assist us in developing strength, flexibility, body awareness and muscle engagement according to each person’s unique body structure, conditioning on any particular day and level of practice.

Here we show a quick example of how the yoga strap can also be used in strength-based poses such as forearm plank, Pincha Mayurasana and dolphin (shown here) to help keep the elbows hugging inwards instead of splaying out as we build arm and shoulder strength. Eventually, as our strength improves our arms will retain the muscle memory of having the parameter of the strap and keep the elbows squeezing in even without it.
